they grow up so fast August 25, 2011 – Posted in: Family, Sewing

Today was a big day in our house. We sent Sofie off to her first day of preschool! We talked to her about school for many weeks before today and she always answered the same, “I not go to school.” But Tuesday night we went to an open house and met her teacher and saw her classroom and she fell in love. All she talked about was going to school. She begged me to take her immediately so she could play and this morning when I woke her up to go, she bounced out of her bed with, “YAY! I go to school today!”

I knew I wanted to make her a new dress for her first day so I began hunting around for an idea weeks ago. I’d stumbled on this blog and fell in love with lots of her tutorials, vowing to try many of them. But this shirt really caught my eye. The tunic was cute and all, but I wanted a dress. So I turned it into one!

I’ve been hoarding these fabrics in my stash and decided it was time to part with them.

I got caught up in making the bodice and forgot to actually pay attention to the measurements, so it turned out kind of boxy. To help with that, I added little bias tape ties that really made it cute!

I love that the back just has 1 button to close it, making it easy to get her in and out of–especially when she’s antsy to go to school!

I took tons of pictures of her standing on our front porch this morning before we left. She wasn’t too keen on posing for me, she wanted to go!

I relented and we headed to the school. She’s going 2 days a week to a church preschool near our house. We pulled up to the school and she recognized the building and excitedly exclaimed, “That’s my school!!” We got inside and she took off playing, never looking back. Neither of us shed a single tear, and she’s been asking me all afternoon when she gets to go back!

Hope all your big’s and little’s have great first days at school, too!
