I’ve been watching my mom sew since I was a little girl. I’ve attempted many projects over the years, usually borrowing Mom’s machine. But over this winter I’ve been totally inspired by creative bloggers who document their “refashions” of thrift store clothes. I was so inspired, I finally bit the bullet and bought myself a good little sewing machine I can hone my skills with. Now, to rearrange my living room to make myself a little sewing corner!

Marg Tulloch Kleisinger March 19, 2014 - 22:26
My mom taught me how to do hand sewing and embroidery as a very young girl. I embroidered on tea towels before I was six years old. I always carried my little sewing basket for overnights at my Grandmother’s house, and I would sew scraps together with plans to create a patchwork “crazy” quilt. My mom taught me how to use my Grandmother’s treadle sewing machine when I was perhaps 10 years old. Home economics classes in high school, plus a neighbour who let me use her electric sewing machine exposed me to how to use patterns and create clothing that I actually wore. Then again, a pull-on elastic waist skirt isn’t all that difficult, even for a student sewer. Finally, a dear old co-worker, years ago, encouraged me to keep sewing, by asking when I didn’t ahve a projet on the go if it was me or my sewing machine that didn’t work. Love sewing. love your blog!
Donna Lee March 19, 2014 - 22:34

Carol Dolbee March 20, 2014 - 10:41
I started sewing when I was seven years old. My mom, being a home economics teacher and a seamstress part time, thought it was always important that we knew how to take care of ourselves. Even if it was just to sew a button back on, a snap, a tear in our clothes, that mean it was a garment that could be saved and not thrown away and money in our pocket. I can remember the matching dresses my mom made for my sister and I with fond memories. I started sewing doll clothes, and small items, then as I grew older, it became a hobby sewing clothes for myself. My sister also learned to sew as well, and we continue on with our love for sewing. We live near one another, and our talk is continuously about sewing, the latest Vogue patterns, what’s the latest trend in fabrics, etc. I will alway sew, and now in my 40’s I sew for my children and make them matching dresses as well. So in all I have been sewing for about 35 years and hope to sew another 35 more. Cheers, Carol

I’ve been sewing, really, since I got married at 21 and my new hubby bought me a Kenmore machine. Sewed off and on until we had kids six years later and made clothing for my two girls. Went off to work and sewing really tapered off. Now that I am retired (8 years now), I have really been enjoying learning how to quilt and improve on my garment and project sewing. Great tutorials and lovely blog.
Rosemary March 22, 2014 - 15:45
I have been sewing for 57 years (I am 65) I started at age 8 at the knees of my grandmother and mom, using first my toy Singer and then my mom’s Singer. I got a Singer Touch and Sew cabinet machine instead of a Hope Chest for my engagement in 1969.
Jess Z March 22, 2014 - 15:48

I ended up here thanks to my sister and your infinity dress pattern — and now I’ve been crawling all over the blog looking for new ideas. 🙂 I learned how to sew pretty young (10ish?) but I don’t spend enough time with my machine. Hoping to make myself a few skirts and a couple of dresses now and get back into it!
Filipa March 22, 2014 - 16:37

Elisabetta March 22, 2014 - 16:58
Thank you so much for this great chance, you and your supporters are amazing. It’s not so long that I’m sewing, my mom thought me to use the sewing machine and mostly I am a self thought sewer. I love making clothes for my kids, but most of all I mend and lengthen them ^_^
I wish to be so so so so so lucky this time!
Karen Lewis March 22, 2014 - 20:05
I’ve been sewing for 45 years. I started when I was in 8th grade because I was mad at my mom for making shirts for me with puffy sleeves. The style then was the tailored shirt look with the button down collars and loop on the back. She told me if I didn’t want puffy sleeves, that I could learn to sew and make them how I wanted. I learned and loved it and the next year in my Home Ec class, I won an award for the most advanced sewer. I had tackled a Nehru jacket with bound button holes. I loved that class because I was left to make what I wanted since I already knew what was being taught in class. From that day on, mom and I made drapes, valances, re-upholstered furniture, and made band uniforms for my competing high school.

Started with shorts for myself and Barbie clothes. Stopped during my teen years and then started again when I was 20 and haven’t stopped since. Congrats on hitting such a huge milestone!

I bought my sewing machine (an se400, which was put of my skill set, considering I got kicked out of home ec 20 years earlier and didn’t even sew buttons…) On black Friday 2011. I’m completely self taught via blogs and YouTube, and now have a small online and local (growing) business selling custom handmade infant’s and children’s clothing, accessories, and gifts.
🙂 so 2.5 years?
Can’t believe I wasted so many years not sewing… It’s like breathing to me now…

Since October I have a FB page Cyber Elves Give Back, all sewists from around the world who sew items for children in Hospitals, Foster Care or Homeless/Low Income. Sewing has kept me sane after losing my corporate job. God has opened another door…

Cool! My mom has been sewing since before I can remember, and she let me play with the sewing machine as well. So with me being 32, I estimate my first steps to creations 25 years ago…

I have always liked to sew but really got into it once I had my daughter, the first dress I ever made for her was your pillowcase, it started with the sewing machine only version and I liked it so much I convinced my husband to get me a serger, just so I could make more and faster. Thank you, hadn’t it been for your pillowcase dress tutorial I might have given up on sewing, now I’m actually getting better, Thank you so much for your inspiration and congratulations on the 5 million views, I’m sure there are million more to come!

I’m so excited about the amazing sponsors and the prizes for your giveaway. I have been a silent follower of yours for a while. My mom got me my first sewing kit when I was in 6th grade and I got my first sewing machine 14 years ago. I am not the best in the world but I try and my daughter is always excited when I make something special for her – that is what matters most to me.
