Pattern Parcel #2 Hanami Dress April 6, 2014 – Posted in: Sewing
It is so much fun to be part of the Pattern Parcel #2 promotion! I’ve been drooling over An’s amazing Hanami Dresses at StraightGrain so when I saw it was included, I got giddy!
I’ve long wondered if you could turn the Hanami into a wrap dress. But once I started I decided I needed to see if I could make it a reversible wrap dress. And I did!
I’d intended to make the dress for Chloe, because today is her 4th birthday! But once I got it all finished it was too big for her, but fit Sofia perfectly. I’m assuming it’s because during all my changes and alterations I forgot about the original seam allowance and did my standard 1/4″. Oops! But Sofia LOVES it and it’ll fit Chloe next year, so YAY! More wear!
It took me quite awhile to figure out how to do this, but it was worth every minute.
Each side is its own complete, adorable dress.
I figured out how to make it reversible by using strategically placed button holes and having it tie on both sides.
The skirts are 2 different widths so I hemmed it as one big circle instead of placing the hems together and sewing them to each other.
I also used a gorgeous coordinating vintage rick rack around the neck. I got the rick rack and gorgeous Erin McMorris floral from the super amazing Jess at Craftiness is Not Optional.
I just can’t get enough of this dress!
So have you heard of Pattern Parcel yet? It’s an amazing idea!

It’s not, I modified it to be a wrap dress! And since I was making it a wrap dress, I took it a step further and made it a reversible wrap!

I returned from a few days away with very little internet access, to find a bunch of gorgeous Hanami dresses!
Thank you so much for making such a beautiful dress with my pattern – the wrap version is so smart! I’ve never used ric-rac, but after seeing your Hanami, I feel like I urgently should!
Thank you for your nice words about my pattern – I hope there are more Hanami’s to come from you 🙂
xo,
